Faith and superstition in Moravian folk song

This bachelor's thesis deals with the phenomenon of the folk song as it was recorded in Moravia, or at least in the Czech language region, in terms of pagan, biblical and commonly Christian influences giving consideration to heterodox forms of Christianity which acted in the process of shaping of its lyrics. Its aim is to find and analyse motives in the lyrics that draw their inspiration from that kind of influences. The thesis strives afterwards to describe and to analyse these motives and if it is possible to introduce their parallels both inside and outside of our cultural area. At the same time it compares variants of the same lyrics or also variants contained in other songs. Finally there is also impact made by these products of folk culture on later art production represented mainly by the work of K. J. Erben. Chosen songs may in the greatest extent demonstrate the diversity of thoughts and themes, as well as the wealth of sources and springs of inspiration. Thus the thesis targets on the places where the folk culture preserved its peculiarity face to face the Christianity and also where it is founded in some tension with the orthodoxy regardless of the age of such opinions. Moravian folk songs collected by František Sušil and contemporary pop music

Folk or national song is an important part of history of each country and language as well. Its writing and recording is useful in way of keeping these songs in mind. Because these national parts of tradition should not be forgotten. In comparison to today modern society with the society living during ages when folk songs were forming we can see the difference in their social role and its uniqueness. After introduction its dating and context of collectors of Sušil´s time there will be mentioned musicians who were inspired by his collections. These are mentioned composers from the nineteenth until the twentieth century and their classical music. After that the main focus of the work will be oriented on contemporary music performers and their opinion on their creative approach, promotion and effect of propagation of their genre with folk roots.

Sušil´s Collections of Folk Songs from 1835 and 1840 and How They Were Used in the Third Collection

The paper deals with the first two Sušil´s collection which have not been published in re-editions, so that they are not accessible to the widerscientific public and the musicians: Moravské národní písně (Moravian National Songs), Brno 1835, and Moravské národní písně: Sbírka nová s 288 nápěvy (Moravian National Songs: New Collection with 288 Tunes), Brno 1840. Sušil later used the material from these collections when arranging his third, most voluminous collection (1860).
